History of Photography…

Since we started the research for our Photography Workshops last year, we came about the most wonderful detail regarding the history of photography and found the topic EXTREMELY fascinating! I’m sure we could go into deep depths with all the information available to us today. So for now we are going to discuss the most important highlights that made photography it is today with some awesome pictures to accompany the info.

The History of Photography stretches as far as the 4th Century BC, where the first reference to cameras was recorded by Aristotle. Around 2000 years later, a lens was added which greatly improved the sharpness of the image. The word “photography” was only officially invented and used in 1839 by Sir John Herschel in a lecture before the Royal Society of London, on March 14. It became known to the world that day, what a revelation!

The first permanent picture was taken by a French inventor Joseph Nicéphore Niépce. The picture was taken from his windowsill and exposed for 8 hours.

The first picture of a person was taken in 1839, by Louis Daguerre. He took the picture of the street scene from his apartment window and a man remains still long enough for a shoe-shine was lucky enough to become unwittingly the first person to be photographed.

After these events came a few other important moments such as:
Ø  The first war photographs

Ø  The first colour photographs in 1861 using colour filters

Ø  1888 the Kodak trademark was invented

Ø  The first colour underwater photo taken in 1926 and published in the National Geographic

Ø  The first high speed images taken in 1940’s of a bullet going through an apple

Ø  The first photo from space in 1946

Ø  The first full colour images taken in 1962

Interesting enough, the first commercially available digital still camera was released only in 1991 by Kodak as the first professional digital camera. Which shows us how the digital camera market exploded exceedingly the past few decades!

For more information and detail, do yourself a favour. Search the internet and read lots of books about the history of photography, it’s unbelievably intriguing and you will definitely learn something new for the day.

Some great websites to visit are:
