History of Photography…

Since we started the research for our Photography Workshops last year, we came about the most wonderful detail regarding the history of photography and found the topic EXTREMELY fascinating! I’m sure we could go into deep depths with all the information available to us today. So for now we are going to discuss the most important highlights that made photography it is today with some awesome pictures to accompany the info.

The History of Photography stretches as far as the 4th Century BC, where the first reference to cameras was recorded by Aristotle. Around 2000 years later, a lens was added which greatly improved the sharpness of the image. The word “photography” was only officially invented and used in 1839 by Sir John Herschel in a lecture before the Royal Society of London, on March 14. It became known to the world that day, what a revelation!

The first permanent picture was taken by a French inventor Joseph Nicéphore Niépce. The picture was taken from his windowsill and exposed for 8 hours.

The first picture of a person was taken in 1839, by Louis Daguerre. He took the picture of the street scene from his apartment window and a man remains still long enough for a shoe-shine was lucky enough to become unwittingly the first person to be photographed.

After these events came a few other important moments such as:
Ø  The first war photographs

Ø  The first colour photographs in 1861 using colour filters

Ø  1888 the Kodak trademark was invented

Ø  The first colour underwater photo taken in 1926 and published in the National Geographic

Ø  The first high speed images taken in 1940’s of a bullet going through an apple

Ø  The first photo from space in 1946

Ø  The first full colour images taken in 1962

Interesting enough, the first commercially available digital still camera was released only in 1991 by Kodak as the first professional digital camera. Which shows us how the digital camera market exploded exceedingly the past few decades!

For more information and detail, do yourself a favour. Search the internet and read lots of books about the history of photography, it’s unbelievably intriguing and you will definitely learn something new for the day.

Some great websites to visit are:
·           National Geographic ( http://photography.nationalgeographic.com/photography/ ), they give a slideshow and timeline of the history where some of the above information was found.
·           Wikipedia ( http://www.wikipedia.org/ ); I love Wiki you can find almost any information on any topic you want
·           Google.com {If in doubt, GOOGLE it!}

Hope you find the History of Photography just as fascinating as we do and that this article will give a deeper understanding of how photography came to be and what it took to be what it is today!

Happy searching!

Lets talk Photography...

Photography has grown so much in the past few years and nowadays everyone does it for a hobby or just for fun. There is so much to learn of photography, it is a shame not to learn more about it and not to appreciate what it could mean to each of us and to the world.

If we explore the subject of photography, we will discover how much it means to so many people. Photography dates back to the 1600's, up to 1839 when the word "Photography" was officially invented. What a revelation! This is a perfect example of "changing life as we know it"! Just imagine what they've accomplished in that time and for the future. Just think of where we are now since then. Digital Photography was only invented in the 1990's so just think of the time passed and what we have now in our grasp.

We will focus on the process and the history of photography in the near future.

Today I really want to focus on what photography means to us. Most of us own cameras and love to use it for everything and everywhere we go. We keep it in our handbags, pockets and any place where we can just grab it quickly when a special moment happens. When we visit the zoo we take pictures of every animal and pictures of ourselves from every angle and in front of every corner there is. At gatherings we take pictures of everyone that is there (whether you know them or not), making faces and laughing at the pictures.

That is exactly what photography means to us, that we are able to live in the moment! Where else could you do things, have fun, see people you haven't in a while, make strange faces, do random things and jump in the air for no reason. Then relive it in every picture you get to look at and keep it forever? How special is that?

In my opinion photography is one of the best inventions and so easy for us to use. And everyone get to use it! You don't have to be a professional or a genius to do it, just have interest and be willing to learn something from it other than the technical aspects such as apertures and shutters.

I'm very excited about this blog, 'cause I get to share the most wonderful things with you. Whether it’s information, techniques, assignments, challenges, my photos and other I get to post for discussion.

Hope you get to see and experience the awesome world of Photography! May it change life as we know it! :)
